UNSW Alumni Profile – David Moses of Horizon

Our Managing Director David Moses was recently profiled on the University of New South Wales Built Environment website.

Q. Tell us a little about your current role

A. I am the Managing Director of Horizon – a multi-award winning building firm specialising in high-end luxury homes – both new and renovations. We also have experience in commercial projects, as well as a small works and maintenance division, as well as an advisory service to clients and architects aimed at cost-planning and risk management. This gives us the ability to offer an end to end service from pre-construction through the building phase, and look after and maintain the home after completion. I am involved in the day to day running of the business, business development, business acquisition, construction management etc. I try and speak to every one of our site managers every day. We were recently named the Master Builder of the Year by the MBA NSW.

Q. How did your degree prepare you for the workforce?

A. Like a good house, which needs solid foundations, the course at UNSW gave me the tools I needed to start my career with the fundamental knowledge I could build on once I started working.

Q. What is the most valuable thing you took away from your time at UNSW?

A. In my first lecture on my first day, our lecturer (Clyde Smythe) told us that “Builders don’t build – they manage”. I reinforce this philosophy every single day with our staff in our business. Aside from that, we have a group of mates that we studied with that still catch up twice a year, and really enjoy each other’s company.

Q. Do you have any advice for current Built Environment students?

A. Get out and work in the industry as much as possible whilst you’re studying. Either a few days a week or at least in the holidays. This will make what you’re learning in the classroom a lot more relevant. Ask lots of questions. Listen to the answers.
